A look at debit card information.
When you swipe your debit card, you may not pay attention to what the numbers on your card mean. But knowing how to quickly find your debit card number, CVV code, and the expiration date is essential for online purchases and using your debit card over the phone, both for accuracy and security purposes.
Your debit card number. The sixteen digits on your card is your debit card number. It is unique to your checking account but different from your account number. You'll have to read off or enter this number when making a purchase over the phone or online. This is the most important number on the card so be sure to not share or lose this information.
Your debit card CVV code.A CVV code is a three- or four-digit code (depending on your credit card company) and is also known as the security code. On Visa, Mastercard, and Discover cards, you can find the three-digit number on the back of your card, next to the signature box. If you have an American Express card, this four-digit number is on the front. The CVV code is another added measure of security to protect your bank account.
Your debit card expiration date.On your debit card, there is a date that is listed next to the phrase “valid thru.” This date is the month and year (MM/YY) your debit card is valid until – in other words, the card expires after that day in that month. You should receive a new debit card in the mail from the bank before your current card expires.
Your debit card EMV chip.On newer debit cards, you'll find an EMV chip or microchip. The chip is located above your debit card number and used to protect you from fraud. The addition of this advanced technology gives you and your bank account extra fraud protection as it makes it hard to duplicate the data on your card compared to the magnetic strip.
