For nearly 40 years, Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland has been helping families of children receiving treatment at area medical facilities. However, what started out as a nonprofit organization providing low-cost or no-cost lodging has evolved into much more.

Over the years, a system of support services has branched out from that core mission.

“Anything we can do to assist these families is one less thing they have to worry about,” says Craig Wilson, executive director of Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland.

Offsite and onsite care

Every year, hundreds of families from around the state, nation and world stay at the main Ronald McDonald House, located at East 105th Street and Euclid Avenue. But it serves local families with children receiving treatment at area hospitals as well, families who don’t need full-service lodging but can’t always go home at their convenience. A little more than 10 years ago, the Ronald McDonald House developed onsite Ronald McDonald Family Rooms to serve local families.

“We now have four around the region,” Wilson says. “It’s an area to get away from the hospital environment without leaving the hospital.”

The success of the Family Rooms has helped spur the development of other services, including, a resource website for Ohio families, and STAR Centers, a brand-new service designed to provide a fun and welcoming environment for children while their family members receive outpatient care.

“The first STAR Center opened last June, and another in November,” Wilson says.

Working together

The Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland provides support in many ways, but it wouldn’t be as effective without its own support network, including Huntington.

“They’ve been our main bank for quite a while, and we’ve expanded our relationship over time,” Wilson says.

Huntington was instrumental in helping the organization secure New Markets Tax Credit in 2012, as well as other loan services.

“We’ve had some really great support from Huntington,” Wilson says. “If we have questions, their team is very responsive. And they’re very community-focused. They’re a great supporter of events, fundraisers and other activities we do in the community.”
