Catholic Social Services (CSS) is an anti-poverty agency whose goal is to empower people in need—regardless of background—with the tools they need to reach their full potential.

“We serve more than 33,000 people in need each year in Central and Southern Ohio,” says CSS President and CEO Rachel Lustig. “We work with people who are trying to change their lives by helping them overcome the barriers that keep them in poverty.”

Making a difference

Catholic Social Services helps working-poor families stabilize and become self-sufficient through case management, mental health care, and emergency assistance. CSS helps low-income seniors age with grace and independence through supportive services and community-impact opportunities. Whether working with families or seniors, CSS knows that poverty is complicated and requires holistic solutions.

“Our clients have a fire inside them and the desire to build better lives for themselves and their families, which is half the battle,” Lustig says. “We offer a wide range of services to help families and seniors reach their goals, whether the goal is learning English as a second language, getting legal assistance, accessing health resources, staying independent in their homes, or getting a higher degree that will lead to a living-wage job. We help families get to a better place so they never need us again.”

A helping hand

Catholic Social Services relies on community partners like Huntington to provide its much-needed services to the Columbus community. This partnership is visible in many ways—Huntington’s Chief Technology and Operations Officer Paul Heller sits on CSS’ board of directors, Huntington provides financial support to the agency, and Huntington employees volunteer at CSS’ Our Lady of Guadalupe Center. Through the Our Lady of Guadalupe Center, CSS works to reduce poverty in Columbus’ Hispanic community by addressing its root causes through a combination of emergency assistance and supportive services. Thanks to Huntington’s partnership, CSS provided 105,589 meals and served 3,167 unduplicated clients at the Guadalupe Center in 2018.
