How does the Secured Credit Card work?

Step 1:

Make a refundable deposit

Start with a deposit of at least $250, up to $2,500. That amount becomes your credit limit and stays in place while you use your Secured Credit Card.

Step 2:

Use your new secured credit card like any other credit card

Make everyday purchases and enjoy 1% unlimited cash back. Be sure to make monthly payments on time and stay within your credit limit—both can help you build your credit. We report your secured credit card to all three major credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion.

Step 3:

We’ll check if you’re ready to upgrade

After seven months, we’ll start reviewing your account periodically to see if you’re eligible to upgrade to the Huntington Cashback Credit Card.

Step 4:

Get your deposit back

If you qualify for an upgrade, we’ll return your deposit and transfer your balance to your new Huntington Cashback Credit Card—no extra steps needed.

Secured Credit Card FAQs

A secured credit card is a type of credit card that requires a one-time, refundable security deposit from the cardholder. The deposit is used as collateral, which assures the credit card issuer that you can pay your bill when it’s due. The activity on your secured credit card is also reported to the three main credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion). That way, when you practice credit-building habits, you may help strengthen your credit score over time.

As mentioned, to open a secured credit card, you must make a deposit that will equal your credit limit. Once your deposit is made, you can use your secured credit card just as you would a traditional unsecured credit card—make purchases almost anywhere and make payments toward your credit card balance each month. After seven months, we’ll let you know if you’re eligible to upgrade to the Huntington Cashback Credit Card. Once you upgrade to the new card or close your Secured Credit Card and pay off your balance, you'll get your deposit back.

Both secured and unsecured credit cards function in the same way—receive a set credit limit, use your card to complete purchases, and make payments on the card each month. Both have interest rates, so if you carry a balance on your card month to month, you’ll be charged interest, increasing the amount of money you owe to your credit card issuer.

Unsecured credit cards don’t require a deposit to open an account, meaning the credit card issuer is assuming a higher level of risk and often won’t be reimbursed for missed payments. For this reason, unsecured credit cards are harder to qualify for. Unsecured credit cards also tend to come with more attractive benefits, like rewards, cash back, lower fees, and lower interest rates.

Yes, secured credit cards could help improve your credit score when used responsibly and when credit card issuers report your secured credit card activity to the three main credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion).
